Bodies of Air France Victims Returned to Land

PARIS, France (CNN) -- The first bodies to be recovered from the crash of Air France 447 returned to land Tuesday, as helicopters landed on the Brazilian archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, according to a CNN reporter on the scene.

Two Brazilian helicopters, each able to carry up to eight bodies, took off earlier to rendezvous with the Brazilian navy ship carrying the 24 bodies that have been recovered so far.

Air France 447 crashed in the Atlantic Ocean last week en route from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil to Paris, France, with 228 passengers and crew on board. It was the deadliest plane crash ever for Air France.

The cause of the crash is not yet known, but investigators are looking at the role of airspeed sensors known as pitot tubes, among other factors.

David Carradine Found Dead

David Carradine Found Dead

Oscar-nominated actor David Carradine, best known for his role as Kwai Chang Caine on the 1970s TV series Kung Fu, has died at age 72.

Carradine was found dead in the Thai capital, Bangkok, a spokesman for the U.S. Embassy said Thursday.

His personal manager, Chuck Binder, was quoted by People Magazine as saying that the death was "shocking and sad. He was full of life, always wanting to work ... a great person."

American actor Carradine, was in Bangkok to shoot his latest movie, Stretch, and stayed at a Suite Room 352 of the Park Nai Lert Hotel on Wireless Road since June 2.

The film crew were aware of his absence when they went to dine out at a restaurant on Sathorn Road on June 3.

Carradine did not show up at the dinner and the team could not reach him. They assumed that he took a rest because of his age.

It was a hotel's maid who opened his suite on Thursday at 10 am after her repeated calls at the door were unanswered. She found Carradine in a closet. He was described as being half naked.

Police said evidence at the scene showed that he hung himself.

"It looks like a suicide," said Pol Col Somprasong Yentuam, chief of Lumpini police. "He was a big man and it would have been difficult for someone to move him in there and kill him in there."

Police said he was dead for not less than 12 hours and found no sign of fighting, or intrusion or assaults.

Somprasong said security at the hotel was very good. American Embassy officials had also been to the scene, police sources said.

Facts and Speculation on Air France Plane Crash

An Air France flight carrying 228 passengers and crew crashed into the Atlantic Ocean on Monday en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris.

Below are facts about the doomed flight and some of the speculation about what might have caused the disaster.

FLIGHT AF 447

May 31

2203 GMT - Air France says the plane, an Airbus A330-200, takes off from Rio airport with 216 passengers and 12 crew.

June 1

0148 GMT - The aircraft leaves Brazilian air force radar, flying normally at 35,000 feet at a speed of 453 knots.

0200 GMT - Air France says the plane crossed into a "stormy zone with heavy turbulence".

0214 GMT - The plane sends automatic messages indicating an electrical fault, Air France says. Prime Minister Francois Fillon says messages were sent regularly over a three minute period showing all "systems were out of order". Brazilian authorities are reported as saying messages also indicated a loss of pressure in the aircraft. No mayday or distress signal received.

0220 GMT - Air traffic controllers expect update from plane. Nothing happens. Soon after, it fails to enter Senegal airspace.

0910 GMT - Plane due to land in Paris, but never arrives. Half an hour later, Air France announces the plane is missing.

POSSIBLE SCENARIOS

Whatever happened to the plane, it was brutal and catastrophic. Here are some of the possible issues.

STORM - Air France says a combination of circumstances could have led to the crash, notably citing lightning and turbulence. The plane flew into a notoriously stormy area that shifts around the Equator, known as the Intertropical Convergence Zone.

Weather experts contacted by Reuters and quoted on the Internet confirm there were storms in the area and that the plane flew through as many as three thunderstorm clusters.

Pilots fly around bad storms when possible, but although the conditions were rough, a source told Reuters two Lufthansa jets passed through the same area just before and after the Air France plane, suggesting that no one thought the weather to be exceptionally bad or dangerous. [ID:nL1719357]

Experts also say jets are designed to withstand lightning, but add that a direct hit might have disrupted the plane's radar and radio, which could explain the communications blackout.

LePoint.fr news website said on Tuesday that some external sensors on the plane appeared to have frozen, which might have compromised cockpit readings. There was no confirmation of this.

TURBULENCE - If the plane was brought down by "natural causes", then turbulence is the most likely culprit. An article on www.weathergraphics.com explains how a sudden, isolated storm cell might have caused severe turbulence, adding that "young updrafts" caused by such a phenomenon are hard to detect and can be very powerful. Some aviation experts have drawn a parallel with a 2006 crash when a Russian aircraft plunged to earth near the Ukrainian border after hitting a storm and turbulence.

TECHNICAL FAILURE - Without the black box it is impossible to know what role, if any, technical problems played in the crash. While malfunctions were signalled by the plane, it is impossible to say if these were the cause of the crash or a side-effect of other problems.

TERRORISM - Both Air France and government ministers say they can rule nothing out, but have stressed that there is nothing to indicate terrorism was involved. An explosion would explain the sudden loss of the plane, but more than 24 hours after it vanished there have been no public statements claiming responsibility.

Air France Crash Update

Everyone is looking for answers as to how, exactly, Air France Flight 447 with 238 people aboard could have gone down this week after it took off from Brazil, but unfortunately, it may be quite awhile before we get any.

After plane debris was found yesterday about 400 miles northeast of some Brazilian islands, Brazilian and French military planes are continuing the search. But Paul-Louis Arslanian, a French crash investigator leading that country’s investigation, said today that the flight data and voice recorders of the Airbus 330, which could contain vital clues as to what exactly happened in the sky, may be lost forever, since the plane presumably crashed in the middle of the ocean. But officials said there appeared to be no problems with the plane before takeoff Sunday.

Air France Plane Missing




Airbus released this information about the missing jet:

Airbus regrets to confirm that an Airbus A330-200 operated by Air France has been lost about 3.5 hours after departure. The aircraft was operating a scheduled service, Flight AF 447, from Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) to Paris (France).

The missing aircraft involved in the accident, registered under the number F-GZCP, was MSN (Manufacturer Serial Number) 660, delivered to Air France from the production line in April 2005. The aircraft had accumulated approximately 18,800 flight hours in some 2,500 flights. It was powered by CF6-80E1 engines. At this time no further factual information is available.

In line with ICAO Annex 13 international convention, Airbus has offered full technical assistance to the investigation board. The investigation remains the entire responsibility of the relevant board and it would be inappropriate for Airbus to enter into any form of speculation into the causes of the accident.

The concerns and sympathy of the employees go to the families, friends and loved ones affected by the accident. [Source]
